Welcome to our Fantasy Primer. This is a companion to our This Week In Fantasy Sports segment on Sports With The StatMan, Saturdays at 10am ET on BlogTalkRadio (www.blogtalkradio.com/The-StatMan).

In this space, we will cover the past week in fantasy sports with statistics and trends, as well as the upcoming week with injuries, hot pick-ups, schedules, and predictions.  If there is anything you want to see that is not on here that will help you with your fantasy team, just let me know!

Fantasy Headlines

  • The week kicks off with Super Bowl LI. The Patriots are favored by 3 points and the Patriots and Falcons have an over/under of 59 points. Scroll down for my picks for the game and some of the prop bets.
  • In fantasy hockey,
  • All-StatMan Teams for January have been announced and only two of the fantasy football named to the team are playing in the Super Bowl.
  • We kick off our 2017 StatMan Fantasy Baseball Preview with a breakdown of catchers.

Super Bowl LI (NFL Week 21)

Game Picks

Last Week: 1-1 straight up, 1-1 against the spread

Playoffs: 7-3 (.700) straight up, 7-3 (.700) against the spread

New England vs. Atlanta

Spread: New England by 3

Over/Under: 58.5 points

Prediction: New England 37, Atlanta 31

Rationale: Both teams have explosive offenses with excellent field generals in 4-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady and 2016 AP MVP Matt Ryan.  Atlanta has the slight edge on offense, but New England’s defense could be the difference with a big stop late.  Look for a lot of offense on both sides to light up the scoreboard.  The highest-scoring Super Bowl was when San Francisco and San Diego combined for 75 points in Super Bowl XXIX.  That record may be in danger.

Prop Bets

The Super Bowl is not just any other football game.  There is a lot of pomp and circumstance, from the coin flip to the commercials to the halftime show.  And, there are also the prop bets.  The other games do not have this, mainly because no one would care enough to bet on side wagers.

Here are the most interesting prop bets, as posted on OddsShark.com/super-bowl/props:

  • National anthem (Luke Bryan) – Over 2:15 (-120), Under 2:15 (-120); Pick: UNDER
  • First scoring play – Touchdown (-165), Field Goal or Safety (+135); Pick: TOUCHDOWN
  • First TD scorer for Patriots – Pick: Tom Brady (+1400, longest odds of named players)
  • First TD scorer for Falcons – Pick: Julio Jones (+400, co-favorite)
  • Odds to win MVP – Pick: Tom Brady (+160, favorite)
  • Color of Gatorade poured on winning coach – Pick: Orange (+300, co-favorite)

All-StatMan Team: January
